TEHRAN (NIPNA) – Plans are under way to bring Iran’s petrochemical production capacity to 150 million tons per year from currently 66 million tons by realization of the second and third leaps in the industry by 2026.

The CEO of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC), Behzad Mohammadi, said Iran’s petrochemical production capacity would reach 150 million tons per year by 2026.

During a visit to the Arak site of the Petrochemical Research and Technology Company (PRTC), the official, who is also the Deputy Minister of Petroleum for Petrochemical Affairs, said new policies were being defined for the intelligent development of the petrochemical industry in Iran, adding the envisaged production capacity would be materialized once strategic, propulsion and combined feedstock projects come on stream across the country.

Mohammadi said given the strategic planning taking place in the industry, the sector has moved towards more smart development and based on this, the development path of this industry will have higher resilience and less vulnerability.

He stated that by 2026, 134 petrochemical plants will be operating in Iran with an annual production capacity of 150 million tons.
